The Intelligence Department Studios are located in the former Operative Technical Sector building in the Berlin-Alt-Hohenschoenhausen restricted area. This four-story building was built in 1985 by the Ministry of State Security, and was responsible for the development, production, and maintenance of all espionage equipment including wiretapping devices, cameras, camouflage, and monitoring instruments.
This 16,000m2 building is now offering studio spaces for artists ranging from 18m2 to 150m2. Studios have 3.84 meters high ceilings, large wide windows and are each equipped with sink and central heating. High power voltage and Internet connection are available upon request.
The building has a large-scale freight elevator, parking spaces, showers, and separate storage units that can also be rented. As of September 2010 artists of ranging disciplines are occupying studios on the first floor. By 2011 after the completion of the renovation, the studios will be home for over one hundred artists from all over the world. The building is easily accessible 24 hours by trams M5 (Freienwalderstrasse stop) and M6 (Genslerstrasse stop) both 20 minutes from Alexanderplatz.
