Recent ontvingen enkele leden en de NKvB een uitnodiging om deel te nemen aan een Sculpture Symposium in Senegal met medewerking van het Ministerie van Cultuur aldaar:

The objectives of the festival are as follows:
- Promoting the arts and artists and make Senegal an artistic destination.
- Linking relationships between artists from both sides
- Artistic and cultural exchange between the two sides
- Exchange of artistic experiences between artists from countries Northern and southern countries...
Zo gaat de uitnodiging door… Ga niet in op deze uitnodiging. Het is een sluwe poging om beeldhouwers geld uit de zak te kloppen, zoals blijkt uit de waarschuwing die een van onze leden ontving van een collega in Estland:
Beste collega’s,
Ga niet in op deze uitnodiging ze zijn alleen op je geld uit !!!!!!!! Ik ben gewaarschuwd door een collega uit Estland “geïnvesteerd” in een reis. waarop ze meer geld wilden. Het is dus nep over de ruggen van de kunstenaars wees gewaarschuwd.

Dear Henk, this Senegal letter is about a fake symposium- there is no symposium and they are only cheating out money!!! I got this letter ab. 1,5 months ago and was so interested and sent them the project etc. and "was invited". They sent me all sort of invitations and hotel reservations etc. All this finally ended that I sent them the half money to buy tickets and when they asked about the second half I started to understand that something is wrong. But they got quite some money from me. This is the first time in my life I hear about a fake symposium - now they are cheating out the money from the artists. So you are lucky - you are warned by me!!

Ja, daar was ik bijna ingetuind, het zag er wel heel officieel uit allemaal, maar op een gegeven moment begon de twijfel toch te knagen en na contact met Zwitserse kunstenaars had ik het helemaal gehad. Toch begrijp ik niet dat een niet onbekende Senegalese beeldhouwer zich met deze praktijken inlaat. Het is een heel geraffineerde, gemene manier om iemand te belazeren, je moet toch echt bekend zijn hoe een beeldhouwerssymposium in elkaar steekt om zoiets op te zetten.
